Americans to America: "What the Fuck?"

Lulled into a false sense of security by bad polling and having truth on their side, 54 million Americans were stunned last night to discover that 58 million Americans actually voted for George W. Bush.

We here at What We Know can only compare the pain of this discovery to the time we accidentally nailed our left testicle to the dining room table. (And given the chance to avoid a night of watching Brit Hume achieve climax, we would have pulled out the old hammer and nails and gone to town on the right one.)

The hand-wringing and finger pointing on the left has already begun. Knock it off. We need to learn from this. Our message didn't get through. When polls show that a majority of Bush supporters believed the hype that Saddam was involved in 9/11, the truth didn't get through. When the poor and middle class vote for a man who will continue to steal from them to give to the rich, the truth didn't get through. When milions of women choose fear over their own reproductive rights, the truth didn't get through.

So what do we do?

We fight.

There is no alternative. This is our country. It is the greatest country in the world and it needs us now more than at any other time in the last century. There is no time to complain that it will be hard work. That's for the other guy. In order to fight the tidal wave of right-wing, aggressive, repressive, depressive and potentially life ending shit that will be coming from this group who took a stolen election as a mandate, and will take a decisive popular vote win as a crusade, we are going to need our A-game. Because this isn't about us anymore.

It's about our kids.

The havoc that a second Bush term will wreak on our rights, our environment and our standing in the world will leave this country fundamentally worse off than we inherited it.

Our children deserve better than that.

Our children deserve an America where decisions are based on hope not fear. They deserve an America where their leaders don't lie to their face and, when caught, lie some more. They deserve an America that doesn't burden them with debt or parents whose social security went south with the stock market. They deserve an America that doesn't hate them because of how they look or whom they love. They deserve an America where health care is a right, not a privilege. They deserve an America where wearing a t-shirt doesn't get you arrested. They deserve an America that doesn't cave in to terrorism by slashing and burning the Bill of Rights,

Our children deserve the America that says "I have a dream"; the America that says "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." They deserve the America that seperates church and state because who, or if, you worship is nobody's business but your own.

As President Clinton so elequently said: "There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured by what is right with America."

We got beat, but we were not wrong.

No sleep till Brooklyn.

Fin,
I just discovered this site and your letter.
No one has said it better.
It's time to roll up our sleeves and take the devil on.
They scare me but I'm not about my fear. I'm about my courage.
So are you.
Thanks

I just wanted to state to you that I (as well as many others, many of whom will not speak out) am against the plan for the I-80 Pa toll road plans, as well as many companies, Pennsylvanians, and Americans. All this will do is take more money from the American people, and ultimately drive up prices for goods that are trucked across our state. One toll road in this state is enough, which the 'state' is looking to sell off anyway. In a time that fuel is spiraling out of control & jobs are being eliminated because of businesses closing and relocating oveseas, this is not a good idea. I love this country and enjoy living here, but what kind of chance will our children have? Things are becoming harder to afford each and every day. Give the common folk a victory and stop the toll road!

As Americans, we 'all' need to be worrying about the bill trying to be passed about giving illegal's social security, (not sure how this can even be considered when social security is already in a heap of trouble let alone these folks have never paid into it); about the hatred that the illegal mexicans have for America and the problems in the southwest United States. What type of trouble did they get in for burning the American flag? If they hate America so much, they should leave or be sent back! Oh, and lets not forget the probability of terrorists still looking to plot disaster in our country.

If you are living in the UNITED STATES, why is it not mandatory that you learn to speak the english language, which is our language and has been for a very long time?? Why are so many of our congressional representatives against English as our official language? China should also be a 'major' concern, since they now produce most of our products and rumor has it that they are in the market to start buying up more real estate over here, including toll roads (maybe Pennsylvania's)! I believe they are a major threat to the U.S.(maybe not right now, but sometime in the future). They are buying up much of our metals; and lets not forget that they are the U.S shoemaker---without them we would perhaps be a shoeless country! Though I try very hard to be optimistic about the future of this country, it sure seems like we are being sold out. I am really hoping and praying that we can stay the "UNITED STATES of AMERICA".

(These are the the views of many, though voiced by one!)

Thankyou for your time.

Sincerely,

Bill (a really concerned PENNSYLVANIAN/AMERICAN citizen)
